Home of the WILDCATS! Main Office Hours: |
Dear Parents, Salida Middle School’s 8th grade promotion requirements have been recently updated. We have included 6th grade into the eligibility for promotion and the requirement that all classes must be passed with a “D” or better. Our goal is to “catch” students struggling academically before the end of each trimester. For this reason, Salida Middle School is proud to offer before and after school interventions to our students. Academic Study Hall (ASH) is a program designed to assist students in completing their homework. This class meets three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). ASH is offered to students whose grade is suffering due to a lack of completed homework or lack of test preparation. ASH is a small group with no more than 20 students in each class and is supervised by an SMS staff member who is in contact with specific teachers regarding homework assignments and upcoming tests. In an effort to communicate who is attending and which assignments are being completed to the classroom teacher, students attending ASH will be required to sign in and indicate the subject of focus that day. We recommend that students attend the ASH within their academic house. We will be offering both before and after school Academic Study Hall classes and students are welcome to attend more than one ASH. This is a focused study time and students who choose to waste time during this class will be asked to leave. You will be notified by phone and/or letter should your child be removed from ASH. Any student who is failing a class at progress report time will be recommended to ASH. Again, the goal of the study hall is to provide a structured hour three days a week for students to complete work with an adult who knows what is due in each class and can provide them with the academic assistance they need to be successful. Academic Intervention - In addition to Academic Study Hall (ASH), subject specific (Academic Intervention) assistance will be offered to students. Currently, we are offering an Algebra Support class, a sixth grade math support class, and a Physical Science Support class. We are adding a pre-Algebra (Math 7) support class and a writing intervention class. These classes are taught by credentialed teachers who work closely with their colleagues to not only offer homework assistance, but also provide students with a preview or review of skills currently being addressed during the school day. Students who are demonstrating skill weakness in the specific content areas mentioned above may be recommended to this after school support program. Students may attend both Academic Intervention and ASH if their schedule permits. Academic Study Hall and Academic Intervention support classes are now available for your child to attend should they need additional assistance in a class or are in danger of failing a class. We know that it can be an inconvenience to families when student’s come to school early or stay late. For this reason, Salida Middle School does offer an early bus as well as two late busses (one leaves at 4:00 p.m. and the second at 5:00 p.m.). We look forward to working with families this year and believe that with our combined efforts every student can succeed. Please feel free to contact Salida Middle School should you have any questions at all. Sincerely, Shannon Kettering |
